The Impact of Artificial Intelligence
Last year, a news headline caught people’s attention. It was about an argument between Zuckerberg and Musk. We all know Zuckerberg is Facebook’s CEO, and Musk is the CEO of Tesla. These two are both proactive and influential people around the world. So, what are they arguing about? Actually, it’s about the development of artificial intelligence, or we can just say AI. Due to modern technology, more and more AI techniques are applied to our daily lives.
Musk is pretty worried about this. He thinks the competition of artificial intelligence may cause a threat and even lead to World War 3. This point reminds me of the movie, “The Terminator.” In this sci-fi movie, robots take over the world and dominate human beings. The whole world becomes a chaos because of the uncontrollable robots.
Zuckerberg, on the other hand, is quite optimistic. He says artificial intelligence is already helping diagnose diseases. In the future, AI can deliver more and more dramatic improvements in the quality of our lives. So he cannot agree with people who are arguing for slowing down the process of artificial intelligence.
As a student majoring in Electrical Auto-control, I am also concerned about this issue. So, whose side should I take? Zuckerberg’s or Musk’s? I think I will take sides with both of them. Why? Because civilization goes on and on. We human beings have experienced from the Industrial Revolution to this era of computer and artificial intelligence. After the Industrial Revolution, machines do a lot of jobs for us. Likewise, in the near future, robots will definitely do more and more work for us. So I agree with Zuckerberg’s opinion that artificial intelligence is inevitable, and it will become a great helper to us.
But I also approve of Musk’s worry about the potential of artificial intelligence. We want robots to help us do difficult things, but we don’t want them to be so smart as to hurt human beings. So, we should be careful about what we design and how they are going to be used. In other words, if we can manage robots well, the application of AI techniques can be positive. In my opinion, artificial intelligence should be designed to assist people. It cannot be designed to hurt human beings. Moreover, artificial intelligence should be developed on the basis of respecting humans, including human privacy.
If we can do so, the convenience of artificial intelligence can be seen everywhere. When I get home, I will have an iRobot help me clean the floor. Doctors will use robotic arms to do the complicated surgery in the hospital. Foreign home attendants can be replaced by robots to do housework and even to accompany the elderly.
All in all, artificial intelligence is surely a big revolution of this century. We cannot deny it. We cannot resist it. We should be well-prepared for its coming.

The Story of Susan Boyle
During the recent years, talent show competitions have been quite popular around the world. You may have known the TV programs, One Million Star in Taiwan, I am a Singer in China, or Britain’s Got Talent in England. In my leisure time, I like to sing songs, so I am very interested in this type of talent show. Most of the time, I just practice my favorite songs with those contestants, but Susan Boyle’s performance gave me more than that. She inspired my deepest feelings and awareness.
Susan Boyle is an ordinary middle-aged woman. She first appeared on the TV program in April 2009. In the beginning, she was a little awkward on the stage and even judged by people with disgust and ridicule. But when she slowly sang the song “I Dreamed a Dream,” the serene beautiful voice stunned all the audience and guest judges. She came in second place on the show in the end.
Who could imagine that a plain-looking woman would have caused such popularity around the world? Traditionally, the entertaining business is obsessed more with physical attraction and youth. People tend to judge a person by his or her appearance, so it is hard for an unattractive woman like Susan to pursue her musical career in this field. Recalling her performance, Susan once said “I know what they were thinking, but why should it matter as long as I can sing? It’s not a beauty contest.” Despite her nervousness and lack of self-confidence, Susan chose to be herself and won the respect and admiration of the whole world.
Actually, in her childhood, Susan was diagnosed as a slow learner. She was bullied and nicknamed "Susie Simple" at school. But Susan overcame all the obstacles with her determination and perseverance and made her dream come true. We can say that Susan’s dream is very much alive and meaningful, especially when she was invited by Obama to the Independence Day celebration at the White House.
Susan has so far released seven albums of her own. Some critics say her success lies in the passion and strength in her lovely voice. There is no denying that Susan does have the potential and talent for singing. However, it is not only her incredible talent but also her distinctive individual traits that make her so notable and welcome. Susan is really a role model that teaches me, “Never judge a person by his or her appearance.”
To sum up, we see a valuable personality trait in Susan’s example, that is, Hope, as the title of her sixth album. No matter how we look and no matter what we have, we should always seize the moment and live our lives in a hopeful and optimistic perspective.
